A pediatric hematology oncologist is a physician who has attained certification by the American Board of Pediatric Hematology Oncology and has specialized knowledge and skill with regard to the diagnosis and treatment of cancers, cancer related problems and serious blood diseases. After becoming board certified in pediatrics the physician must undergo subspecialty training for certification in pediatric oncology and hematology.
